I Thought We Brought Out Our Dead - - -

- - - for Halloween!

By The Way - Martin Luther (Not King) posted his 95 Theses (no Biggles - NOT feces!) on "All Saints Day" - Think of The Olde Days and why certain things were important on (well) certain days! The impact of the act that was done was magnified by the significance in "Liturgical Time" of the particular day.

The Liturgical Year, or "Church Calendar" began on November 1, so October 31 was like "Fat Tuesday before Ash Wednesday, a time to be party-like before the austere day which followed.

From Wiki - - Halloween has its origins in the ancient Celtic festival known as Samhain (Irish pronunciation: [ˈsˠaunʲ]; from the Old Irish samain). The festival of Samhain is a celebration of the end of the harvest season in Gaelic culture, and is sometimes regarded as the "Celtic New Year". Traditionally, the festival was a time used by the ancient pagans to take stock of supplies and slaughter livestock for winter stores. The ancient Gaels believed that on October 31, now known as Halloween, the boundary between the alive and the deceased dissolved, and the dead become dangerous for the living by causing problems such as sickness or damaged crops. The festivals would frequently involve bonfires, into which bones of slaughtered livestock were thrown. Costumes and masks were also worn at the festivals in an attempt to mimic the evil spirits or placate them.

History of the name

The term Halloween is shortened from All Hallows' Even (both "even" and "eve" are abbreviations of "evening", but "Halloween" gets its "n" from "even") as it is the eve of "All Hallows' Day",which is now also known as All Saints' Day. It was a day of religious festivities in various northern European Pagan traditions, until Popes Gregory III and Gregory IV moved the old Christian feast of All Saints' Day from May 13 (which had itself been the date of a pagan holiday, the Feast of the Lemures) to November 1. In the ninth century, the Church measured the day as starting at sunset, in accordance with the Florentine calendar. Although All Saints' Day is now considered to occur one day after Halloween, the two holidays were, at that time, celebrated on the same day. Liturgically, the Church traditionally celebrated that day as the Vigil of All Saints, and, until 1970, a day of fasting as well. Like other vigils, it was celebrated on the previous day if it fell on a Sunday, although secular celebrations of the holiday remained on the 31st. The Vigil was suppressed in 1955, but was later restored in the post-Vatican II calendar.

They'll Never Make it to 40!

Will they still knead me, when they're 64?

Has anyone wondered why October 5, 1969 and October 5, 2008 coincide on a Sundae? I mean our collander is such that coincidences should occur in multiple of 4, not 13 - 39 years.

Here is the story why!

The Solar Year (the length of time for the sun to run rings around Ur---- to orbit the International Space Station) is =2 365.24219 Earth days.

We Earthlings (shut up Mork!) equate this to 365.25 by adding in a Leap Year every 4 years.

But the actual calculation is much more complex. In years ending in a double nought (00) - there is no Leap Year, despite the fact that the year is divisible by 4.

In years ending in a triple nought (000 - like the year 2000) a leap year IS added. Forward in time - if a year ends in a quadruple nought (0000 the year 10,000 for example) then there will be two Leap Year Days added.

So coinciding dates will differ, just as this 39th anniversary did!

That is my theory, by Anne Elk!
